2024-12 Cookiecad V2

Cookiecad V2 was previously Cookiecad Beta. We've now released it as the primary version of Cookiecad!

We've made lots of improvements to Cookiecad in the beta version! The app is now much faster - designs that used to take several seconds to generate now complete in a fraction of a second. We added long running requests like rounded handles and sharp blades.

Here are all the major improvements and changes:

New Features

Round Handles

Added a new handle design option with smooth, rounded tops, giving cookie cutters a more modern and ergonomic look. The rounded handles have curved edges that make them more comfortable to grip and give your cutters a more polished appearance. You can choose between round, chamfered or rectangular handles when designing your cutters.

Sharp Blade Customization

Added new settings to customize your cookie cutter's blade edge. You can now control both the tip width and chamfer height of sharp cutters. A smaller tip width (down to the width of your 3d printer's nozzle) creates a sharper cutting edge, perfect for detailed designs, sharper cuts and easier release. The chamfer height controls how gradually the blade tapers to its tip.

Cake Toppers

Added the ability to create custom cake toppers! To create a topper, select "Cake Topper" from the Thing to Make menu, then enter your message and customize it with these options:

  • Choose from 9 different fonts including decorative styles.
  • Adjust the text height, font size, and spacing between lines
  • Control the base height and pin dimensions (the part that goes into the cake)

The font selector shows a live preview of each style, making it easy to find the perfect look for your message.

Auto Outline

Added a new auto outline feature that makes it super easy to add borders around your designs. Instead of manually creating an outer shape, you can now automatically wrap your design in a circle, rectangle, square, "hull" (which follows the shape of your design), or "none". You can also control how much space to leave between your design and the border. This is especially handy when you're working with designs that have multiple separate parts - the app will figure out the overall size and create a nice border that keeps everything together in one cookie cutter.

Smarter Imprint Generation

Cookiecad is smarter about when to actually create an imprint - if your design is just a simple shape without any interior details, it'll now default to creating a regular outline cutter instead of forcing an imprint.

Interface Improvements

Edge Highlighting

Added the ability to highlight edges in the 3D preview, making it easier to see the details and structure of your designs. This is particularly helpful when working with complex shapes or stamps.

Visual Customization

Added new appearance settings that let you customize how cutters look in the preview. You can now choose between glossy (shiny and reflective), matte (flat and non-reflective), or normal materials. This helps you visualize your designs better and makes the preview look nicer.

Layout and Usability

Fixed several layout issues to make the app look and work better. The 3D preview now stays visible while you scroll through settings (called "sticky preview"), which is helpful for seeing how your changes affect the model. Also cleaned up the settings panel by moving all appearance-related options to their own section at the bottom and adding better spacing between elements. The app now uses the full height of your browser window properly, fixing issues where content would get cut off or have too much empty space at the bottom. We've also increased the viewport size and improved various UI elements like the premium dialog and cake topper icon.

Better 3D Generation

Upgraded our 3D model generation system to produce more reliable and efficient models, which means better print quality and fewer issues with complex designs.

Export Options

Added the ability to export designs in OBJ format, giving you more flexibility in how you can use your designs with other 3D software. OBJ files are better at retaining manifold geometry, which is helpful for printing.
